Well I know that it has been awhile but here is the update.
I did my first cake and it was a half sheet with a truck and motorcycle theme.
I charged $30 and after all was said and done it costed me $3 to make the cake. That’s okay though, still learning and pricing everything.
The second cake I did was a full sheet with tres leche. Decorated with Thomas the Tank. This was fun because I had the chance to use rice crispy treat with the marshmallow fondant and I handmade the trains. The first train, Thomas, took like 2 hours but it is the first time and it looked nice the second train only took 20 minutes. This time I made $4. Wow at least this time there was a profit. Lol!
So things are starting to move. I do not have profit right now because I have to by everything in bulk and can’t get too much because I do not have the storage. But it is getting there.
So anyways it is starting and it is slow , but it is still fun even though there is no money.
Thats why they say when you have to work do something that you really enjoy. Then when things are down it is still okay because you are having fun.
Good Nyte!

Today I am going to inventory all my cake decorating supplies. Then I will see what else I will need. I told my husband that a percentage of all the cakes that I make will be put back into the business. What percentage?? I do not know, any ideas?? You are supposed to make 65% profit on all cakes. But we will see. If I do a wedding cake, that feeds 130 people at $3 a serving it comes to $390 customer cost. Takes away the cost of cake, $90, the plates and pillars, $25, and the boxes to deliver them in, $15. Oh yes then we need the topper, $20. Buttercream and filling roughly $30. So that’s $180! Wow!! So the profit on this one is about 55% ($210)! This is just a quick rough guesstamation. We all know that there are always sweet little surprises that like to creep in there. So still that is pretty good considering this is fun, enjoyable hobby, right? So now what percentage do you reinvest? Maybe take 20% of each sale??? It doesn’t really matter but I think if I just get used to taking a percentage then when I need something, the monies is already there. Then on a side note I will probably already owe money before I even start. LOL!
So off to inventory.

Hi I am Pam! I am a cake decorator and have been for more than 15 years. It is probably closer to 20 but who’s counting. I enjoy cake decorating as it never gets boring always something new and always someone challenging you to see just how extravagant you can get.
Well this blog is going to be about me starting my own cake decorating business. Together we will see all the little gears that are behind a business. I am always looking for ideas and info to make me successful, and hopefully make it a little easier on the other cake decorators who want to do the same.
Now a little background on what I have done so far
1) Tax Payer ID number (always a good start) This number will actually help when you need to purchase items from all the retail suppliers.
2) Registered with Bakery Crafts and Deco Pac. If you are not familiar they have all the kits and supplies you could imagine. I know that there are more out there but I haven’t found them yet. I am hoping that my blog friends will help me there.
3) Made business cards they are being made and will ship in a couple weeks.
I am looking right now into getting my buttercream from Sams Club the reviews are pretty good. I have also contacted distributors such as Dawn to see about their products.
The wedding cakes are probably my easiest at Bakery Crafts you can order the cake, kit and boxes in one stop. Whew one easy part.
So as you see I am only in the baby steps of starting my business.
Any ideas please pass them on!!
